Veterinarian Stephanie McGrath, who also works as an assistant professor of neurology at Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, conducted her own extensive research on hemp extract administration in animals, and was impressed with her findings.

How Does It Work in Animals?

McGrath concluded from her research that in dogs, like humans, hemp extract appears to be metabolized in the liver. While researchers like McGrath are still trying to establish exactly how hemp extract works in animals, they theorize that it interacts with their endocannabinoid system, similar to humans. The endocannabinoid system is present in nearly all animals, and plays an integral role in maintaining homeostasis for a number of organ systems. This complex system modulates the nervous and immune systems, controls pain and inflammation, the digestive processes, and reproduction function.

A 2018 study found that hemp extract can help increase comfort and activity in dogs with osteoarthritis. A year later, McGrath published a study suggesting that hemp extract may reduce the number of seizures epileptic dogs experience.
